In the States at least, minimum wage is different and even punier if you are in a job that gets tips. Back when I was starting my stellar career in make-work, when the minimum was around $4.00, the minimum for service people was around $1.25… (In other words, the tip system is even worse than bullshit!)
The Tip system is bullshit, at least the way it is implemented. They’re like “Okay, I _guess_ you can have minimum wage, but I’m counting your tips in that. If you don’t get enough tips to make minimum let me know and I’ll pay the difference.”
Only there’s an unspoken (or sometimes spoken) understanding that actually asking for that money will get you fired.

Oh yeah it’s bad! Plus people tend to treat food service workers like they exist solely to please them.

It’s not great! Plus minimum wage isn’t a livable wage on the best of days so overall it’s just bad.
