January 2026 Update
Hey there!
First things first, I’ll admit that I’m not sure what sort of things you’d all find interesting to read about concerning 1000 Gates. I’m kind of just winging it here and talking about whatever part of writing or development is on my mind, so please feel free to ask any questions you might have.
Last month was partially spent with me being distracted by both the holidays and moving my new housemate in. She’ll be helping me with backgrounds, which was the part I was most nervous about doing since there’s a lot of those. Beyond that, I’ve been going back through the half of the script I have written down to annotate and edit it: this is how I’m deciding what backgrounds, CGs, and portraits need to be drawn, and when certain character expressions should be used. I could’ve (and probably should’ve) done this at the time, but this is my first time doing anything like this and it entirely slipped my mind in my excitement.
When most of the portrait and background work is done I’d like to do a short, free prologue both to draw in new readers and as a consolation for older readers for the sudden discontinuation of Nine Gates. Unfortunately I do need to make a living, and so as you may have guessed the rest of 1000 Gates will be monetized. Likely 10-15 USD per chapter, which if Chapter 1 is anything to go by, will be a lot of story for the price.
This month’s character spotlight is Mora:

She’s a bit of a roguish tinkerer, very high energy, very volatile. I had a very vivid idea for her appearance in my mind when I first began designing her; her look and character were very much inspired by Jinx (Arcane), Casca (Berserk), and Harrow (The Locked Tomb). She came to me in a dream after having already drawn out the entire main cast and written the whole outline for Chapter 1. I was actually very worried that she might feel tacked onto the story because of how late I made her, but I trusted the process, and I feel that I’ve done a good job making her feel like she was there from the start.
That’s all I have for you this month. See you next time.
